Glendale — Sports and Entertainment Epicenter

Glendale (~250,000) is the West Valley’s anchor and the metro’s sports and entertainment epicenter. State Farm Stadium (the Arizona Cardinals’ home, opened 2006 as University of Phoenix Stadium) has hosted four Super Bowls (XXX/1996, XLII/2008, XLIX/2015, LVII/2023) as well as multiple Final Fours and Fiesta Bowls. Adjacent are Desert Diamond Arena (formerly Gila River Arena, formerly home of the Arizona Coyotes NHL team) and the Westgate Entertainment District.

Cannabis on stadium grounds

Cannabis is strictly prohibited inside State Farm Stadium under the NFL Public Safety Policy and the stadium’s clear-bag/prohibited-items list — this includes flower, vapes, edibles, and concentrates, regardless of Arizona’s adult-use law. The Cardinals’ published prohibited items list includes "chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes/vaping devices" and "any" non-compliant container.

Coyotes update

The Arizona Coyotes franchise relocated/sold to Salt Lake City for the 2024–25 NHL season; Desert Diamond Arena no longer hosts NHL hockey but continues to host concerts, AHL games, and other events.

Luke Air Force Base — Glendale’s Federal Anchor

Luke AFB (Glendale) is the world’s largest fighter wing (the 56th Fighter Wing) and trains 75% of all F-35 pilots in the world, with more than 180 training sorties per day. Per Fighter Country Foundation, the base employs roughly 4,300 active duty, 1,300 reservists, and 1,300 civilians, with about 7,500 military members and 15,000 family members on or near the base. Total economic impact: approximately $2.4 billion annually. Base population including retirees and families: 130,000+.

Luke AFB is federal property — cannabis is a federal crime there, regardless of Arizona law. Federal contractors supporting Luke (Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program, Pratt & Whitney, BAE Systems) require drug-free workplaces. Military personnel face Article 112a of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) for any cannabis use — even off-base, off-duty, in legal Arizona — and can be court-martialed. See our Luke AFB page.

Peoria — Cactus League West

Peoria (~200,000) hosts the Peoria Sports Complex, the spring training home of the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. JARS Cannabis Peoria (20340 N. Lake Pleasant Rd.), Sol Flower Peoria, Trulieve Peoria, and Arizona Natural Selections Peoria are major operators.

Surprise — Cactus League and Retiree Communities

Surprise (~160,000) hosts Surprise Stadium, spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. Per the Cactus League’s official website, "the Texas Rangers saw a 42.3% attendance increase at Surprise Stadium after their championship win" in 2024 — averaging 7,511 fans per game. Surprise has fewer dispensaries due to suburban zoning conservatism.

Goodyear — Fastest-Growing

Goodyear (~115,000) — Census 2024 reported 22.9% four-year growth, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. Goodyear hosts the Goodyear Ballpark (spring home of the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds). Trulieve Goodyear and a handful of independent operators serve the area.

Avondale, Buckeye, Litchfield Park

  • Buckeye — recorded 24.9% four-year population growth (Census 2024); the geographic-extreme west edge of the metro.
  • Litchfield Park — hosts Story Litchfield (12323 W. Camelback Rd.).
