The Tech Corridor
Chandler (~280,000) is the Valley’s tech hub:
- Intel — the Ocotillo and Fab 42 campuses; significant CHIPS Act federal funding makes Intel a federal-contractor-equivalent for compliance purposes
- Microchip Technology — headquartered in Chandler; defense work makes its workforce subject to Drug-Free Workplace Act
- Wells Fargo — major Chandler operations
- PayPal — large Chandler campus
- Northrop Grumman — Chandler operations including space and missile defense work
What this means for cannabis: most major Chandler employers drug-test. A positive THC test typically costs you the job, the security clearance, and (for federal contractors) any future ability to work on federal projects. AMMA medical cards do not protect against federal-contractor drug-testing requirements.
Chandler Dispensaries
Chandler hosts a small but active dispensary scene clustered along Chandler Boulevard and Gilbert Road:
- Sticky Saguaro
- Territory Dispensary (7200 W. Chandler Blvd.)
- Harvest House of Cannabis
- Oasis (Total Health & Wellness)
- Zen Leaf Chandler
- Sunday Goods Chandler
Chandler’s Population Story
Notably, Chandler experienced a population decline of -0.1% in the 2024 Census Vintage Estimates — one of the few Arizona cities to do so. Reasons appear to include housing-cost pressures and Tempe / Gilbert / Queen Creek absorbing growth that previously would have come to Chandler.
The East Valley Defense-Tech Reality
Chandler is the gravitational center of an East Valley defense-tech corridor that includes:
- Boeing Mesa (Apache helicopter plant, ~4,400 employees)
- Honeywell Aerospace (Phoenix headquarters, ~9,000 Arizona employees)
- Lockheed Martin (Glendale F-35 sustainment supporting Luke AFB)
- Raytheon (RTX) (Tucson missile facility plus Valley operations)
- General Dynamics, L3Harris (multiple Valley locations)
Combined with Intel and Microchip, the East Valley employs tens of thousands of people whose jobs are explicitly incompatible with cannabis use. Cannabis use and East Valley defense-tech employment are largely incompatible.
Chandler Police Department
Chandler PD operates similarly to neighboring jurisdictions — state-law-driven, with attention to public consumption and impaired driving. Chandler’s commercial corridors and family-oriented suburban character produce relatively quiet cannabis enforcement.
What Chandler Tech Workers Should Know
- If you work for Intel, Microchip, Northrop, Lockheed, Honeywell, Boeing, Raytheon, or any defense-tech employer: assume any positive THC test results in termination. Even off-duty, off-premises consumption can trigger random or post-incident testing that ends your employment.
- If you hold or aspire to a security clearance: any cannabis use disqualifies you from new clearances and can revoke existing ones. Most clearance applications now ask about cannabis use in the past 12–90 months.
- If you’re job hunting in tech: ask early about drug testing policy. Some smaller Chandler-area tech companies have moved to "test only on reasonable suspicion" or no testing; the Fortune 500 federal contractors have not.
- The AMMA card is not a shield. Federal contractors are explicitly carved out of A.R.S. §36-2813 protections.
